How to setup a Grandstream GXW4004 Voice Gateway



This is a brief guide on how to set up a Grandstream GXW4004 Voice Gateway. It's expected that you will have prior knowledge about networks and networking in order to follow these steps.



First of all, you will need to have a VoIP account ready, if you haven't done so go to Control and log into the member's area and setup your VoIP account.

Once you have done that, you can now move onto the next step.

Upgrading the GXW4004's firmware


It's a good idea to upgrade the unit's software. In more cases than not this will already have been done for you. But if you are the technician at ISP/ATU then please read on and follow the steps to upgrade the GXW.

  1. Connect an ethernet cable to the LAN port of the GXW4004 and the other end to your HUB/Switch.

  2. Plug the power adapter into the GXW4004 and into a power outlet.

  3. With a browser open up 192.168.2.1 and type admin in the password field and click Login.

  4. Click on the Advance Settings tab

  5. Next to Firmware Upgrade and Provisioning make sure TFTP is selected.

  6. Then enter "192.168.0.130/gs/gw4004" without the quotes in the Firmware Server Path field

  7. Then scroll to the very bottom and then click the Update button and then wait till the upgrade is complete.


Configuring the GXW4004 Voice Gateway


Basic settings


  1. Set Time Zone to GMT +10.

  2. Change the Device Mode to Bridge.

  3. Enable WAN side HTTP/Telnet access to Yes

  4. Set Enable LAN DHCP to No.

  5. Then scroll to the very bottom and then click the Update button.


Advance settings


  1. Set NTP Server to au.pool.ntp.org

  2. Then scroll to the very bottom and then click the Update button.


Profile 1


  1. Set Profile Active to Active.

  2. Enter sip.atu.net.au in the Primary SIP Server and Outbound Proxy field.

  3. Enter 1 in Register Expiration.

  4. Set Unregister On Reboot to Yes.

  5. With Preferred DTMF method put RFC2833 in Priority 1, SIP INFO in Priority 2.

  6. Set Disable Call-Waiting and Disable Visual MWI to Yes.

  7. Put 120 in Ring Timeout.

  8. 90 in Hunting Group Ring Timeout.

  9. Set the codec (Preferred Vocoder) prioritisation in the following order: 1. G729 2. PCMU 3. PCMA 4. iLBC 5. G723.

  10. Set Symmetric RTP to Yes.

  11. Select Australia/New Zealand in SLIC Setting field.

  12. Select ETSI-DTMF in Caller ID Scheme field.

  13. Set Disable Line Echo Canceller (LEC) to Yes.

  14. Then scroll to the very bottom and then click the Update button.

  15. Then click Reboot.


FXS Ports


  1. Enter the SIP username under SIP User ID and Authenticate ID column for the first column Port # 1.

  2. Then enter in the password in the respectively Password field.

  3. Set Hunting Group to Active for Port #1.

  4. And select 1 under Hunting Group for all the other Ports you want to activate.

  5. Then scroll to the very bottom and then click the Update button.

  6. Then click Reboot.
